Casita del Maguey
Experience the essence of modern design at Casita del Maguey.
The main level of this fully furnished one bedroom 1-1/2 bath, has a spacious, open layout with living room, dining and kitchen area. Features include 20 foot ceilings, glass windows for north and south exposure, and a private cactus garden for which Casita Maguey gets its name. A winding steel staircase leads up to the 2nd floor master bedroom suite with bath. Continue up the outside floating staircase to reach the upper level roof deck for a cityscape view of San Miguel de Allende.
Located in the northeast section of Centro, very close to the main Mercado, and a level walk of just 4 - 5 blocks from the Jardin, Casita del Maguey is within easy "on foot" reach of restaurants, shops, organic vendors and artisan markets.
Designed by noted San Francisco architects Cathi and Steven House, Casita del Maguey (along with its "sister" Casita del Mesquite) is an integral part of CASA, the Center for Architecture, Sustainability + Art, a new learning and retreat center. Gallery and studio spaces at the front of the property give way to this beautiful pair of separate casitas, each with its own private entrance and self-contained amenities. The whole property is a wonderful mix of terraces, courtyards, fountains and gardens, which link gallery, studios and casitas.
Windows, skylights, stone walls, steps and plantings -- all are carefully choreographed to create spaces that move in constrantly changing vistas and flow with natural light. The casitas invite pause and induce wonder with their simple palette of white lime-washed walls, floors of creamy travertine marble and a red accent wall. Tying the spaces together is a grape-colored "recinto" stone wall along the south side of the property. The architects gave careful consideration to the movement of the sun throughout the seasons in the creative use of windows and skylights that send dancing patterns of light and shadow into every corner.
